When you decide to move to Canada, you need to explore which language tests you will need in order to move to Canada. There are a few options, and we will explore them here in this article.
IELTS
IELTS is a widely available English proficiency test, offering General Training and Academic categories. For Canadian immigration, the IELTS – General Training is recommended. IELTS provides scores for each language ability and an overall band score, but for immigration purposes, the overall band score is not significant.
CELPIP
Specifically designed by IRCC for Canadian English, the CELPIP assesses British and American English along with Canadian accents. There are two types: the General Test and the General LS Test. For immigration, you need to take the CELPIP – General Test. Initially available only in Canada, CELPIP is now accessible internationally.
PTE
The Pearson English Test (PTE) is a newcomer to the list of accepted English tests. Developed to meet IRCC’s language proficiency requirements, PTE evaluates reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. It will be accepted by IRCC for immigration applicants by “late 2023.”
TEF and TCF
For French speakers or those opting for French proficiency, the TEF is required. Two types of TEF are available: TEF and TEFAQ. TEF is recommended as it is accepted for both Quebec and federal immigration, while TEFAQ is solely for Quebec immigration.
Canada being bilingual, submitting test results in both official languages, English and French, may enhance eligibility. However, bilingualism is not a mandatory requirement for Canadian immigration.
Consider your convenience, language proficiency, and test center availability when choosing the language test that best suits your immigration goals. Rest assured that IELTS, CELPIP, PTE, and TEF all assess the same four language abilities: listening, reading, writing, and speaking, and their results are equally recognized for immigration purposes.
